Welcome to my very first blog post! I’ve been wanting to create a blog for a looong time and now I finally have my own little space on the internet where I can have one. I couldn’t be happier to start it all off with discussing the branding and packaging design I’ve created for Prism Beauty Co., a fictitious clean beauty brand.
Makeup has been a huge part of my life (just like design) for the last almost 15 years. It’s always been a way for me to express myself and an outlet for me to relax and meditate as I transformed myself into the confident person I hoped to be.
The mission behind Prism Beauty Co. was to create a cosmetic company that resonated with young womxn everywhere who are navigating a world full of photoshop and facetune. I wanted to create something fun, fresh, and on-trend for this generation to be able to show off their true selves.
Since Prism Beauty Co. is a clean beauty brand I wanted the branding to feel fresh and modern. Instead of going with something obvious like a green color palette with organic textures, I decided to try out a more trendy and feminine gradient blur.
For the logo, I wanted to create something elegant/whimsical and feminine. I used a thin font that’s not quite a sans-serif and not quite a serif to represent the uniquely wonderful womxn that this brand caters to. I also added in a sparkle graphic to represent the name Prism and as a nod to clean beauty.
To juxtapose the logo, I incorporated a font suite that includes bold and playful fonts to add more of a modern feel. I used those fonts in the brand marks as well to include an easy way to incorporate a bold pop of text to packaging and/or social media and web graphics.
I’m really obsessed with how the packaging turned out! When designing the overall brand I always had the packaging in the back of my mind. Packaging is what tends to be the most forward-facing element of a brand—whether it’s sitting on the shelf at Ulta or sitting on your bathroom counter it’s always front and center. It’s a piece of the brand that goes home with the customer, so it needs to be aesthetically pleasing to the eye and functional.
I made sure all the important information detailing what the product is was included on the front of the packaging. I added in the “Modern Clean Beauty” brand mark as a callout so you instantly can tell what the values of the company are.
The gradients I used help the brand feel a bit more fun yet luxurious, and I also experimented with including the logo in a rose gold foil for a similar vibe.
Overall I am extremely proud to have designed something so close to my heart that represents who I am as a brand designer and as a person. Let me know in the comments if makeup is something you also use as a form of expression and if Prism Beauty Co. is a brand that you could see yourself reaching for!
